The takeaway: When you dispute a charge, your credit card company will often immediately give you a temporary, or provisional, credit for the amount charged. (As Chase did for Padilla.) But beware. Ordinarily, a credit card company will check with the merchant. If the merchant says you got what you paid for, the credit card company will remove the temporary credit and stick you with the charge.

Somewhere in the greater D.C. area, the remains of the East Wing are being processed. However much the White House, sometimes called the People’s House, means to Americans, it can still be crumbled into rubble and trucked away. At least the East Potomac Golf Links might get a new hole, which presumably anyone will be able to use, for $42 plus the cart rental.

They believe that the ideas that they perceive university professors as teaching are responsible for the destruction of the country in general and the death of Charlie Kirk in particular. So I think that my situation, hopefully, can shed some light on these very disturbing dynamics and the degree to which the university and the role of the professoriate within it is being made into this scapegoat for a growing authoritarianism in the country. Why talk to journalists about this? Why make it so public given your situation? When I got the email with my home address, I was watching the Yankees-Blue Jays playoff game on my couch. I was kind of frozen and didn’t know what to do. I texted a few friends, one of whom has a lot of experience as an activist. He said, Well, do you want to go silent or make noise? He’s like, It may protect you and your family to have thousands of eyeballs on this case to make it feel like anyone who wants to come at you may think, Oh, everyone knows about this. The authorities know about this. The media knows. So that was my initial motivation. But also I was angry. I think that there is value for professors to make their expertise part of the public conversation.
