I’m at TwitchCon 2025 in San Diego this weekend. I’ve been talking to a lot of science streamers. I’ll be leaning into science in my streams a bit more in the coming months. Expect more fish science streams in the near future!

Undergraduate and graduate students can get $1500 ($2000 for international students) to visit and study in our museum collections. Contact a curator to discuss plans first to make sure we have what you need (that would be @planet-of-fishes.bsky.social for the Ichthyology Department). Come to LA!

Manuscript accepted! Good way to start the week. Can’t wait to share the paper led by @planet-of-fishes.bsky.social with @frable.bsky.social, me, and Michelle Horeczko when it comes out.

As a kid, I remember watching a show about a detective who solved cases from his wheelchair, and today I learned that show started with a Raymond Burr made-for-tv movie from 1968 called Ironside, which led to an 8-season tv show. Anyway, today I watched Ironside.

Stumbled across our Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri, in the collections earlier today. Look at that weird pelvic fin!

Hooked a microscope up to my computer. Once I get it all set up, I’ll be sorting plankton samples at twitch.tv/realfishdoc Daisy isn’t sure about the new streaming setup.

Three years ago, after staying at Cedars Sinai for 42 days for an emergency liver transplant, I was discharged from the hospital. Happy day!

At home, under the weather, revisiting some of my favorite material. Course notes from the Larval Fish Course we taught at VIMS back in the day.

Got this little fish from a plankton sample and couldn’t decide what it was. Tossed it in the ct scanner, as one does. Now I have a much better idea what it is. Any guesses??

Never a dull day as a collections manager of ichthyology @nhm.org Today I am photographing hagfish for a scientist from Kazakhstan.

Today I got to play “guess how many fish are in the jar”, which is one of my favorite games because I get to look at lots of cool fish.

Every time I examine a Pacific Footballfish from the @nhmla.bsky.social ichthyology collection, I am contractually obligated to post pictures on social media. Right @planet-of-fishes.bsky.social?

Apparently I’ve had an account on the other site for 13 years. A lot of things have happened in that time!

I reached affiliate status on Twitch on January 1, which means I can now have emotes for followers and subscribers. Here are the custom emotes I commissioned and just received. Love ‘em!

I was thinking about buying one of these shirts for Angel City FC until I got the same email from the Dodgers, Lakers, and LAFC and realized this is a fundraiser for apparel company Fanatics.

My last post was prompted by this inquiry where Google AI incorrectly states that the Pacific Footballfish has parasitic males. True for some, but not all, anglerfish species. The difference is important!

The boat I learned to fish on forty years ago, rotting behind my grandparent’s barn. Such wonderful memories on this tank of a boat. If I had silly money, I would 100% rescue her from wasting away.

My poor car. I took her for maintenance yesterday and put 800 miles on her today. She’s asking for a checkup already!
