Btw, Raquel de Miranda here! ✍️🕹️

I'm a #gamedev & Narrative Designer (now freelance) who worked on "Avatar: Frontiers", Dontnod's "Banishers", "Last Time I Saw You", "The Merlies", and more TBA

I'm big on dark fantasy/scifi/tragedies, cohesion and themes, and unreasonably ambitious side projects ✊😔
Terrible state in which to be, and after a certain point there's unfortunately no recovering from the Saucelessness. The humane thing to do for your art's sake is to wrap things up as fast as possible and release (or shelve, or put aside for much later). It's very hard to do in practice.
One of the best things to recognise in yourself as a creative person is when you are Sauceless.

Not art blocked. Not struggling with a difficult creative problem.

Being Sauceless is when you've done good work but have been staring at it for too long, and risk making it worse through noodling.

One thing I'm a massive proponent of when starting development on a new indie game...

Getting the music and soundscape in ASAP.

The amount of folks saying that I'm brave for speaking out because of the article, thanks. I'm doing my best.

It's hurt my career but it's worth it.

When I go to bed I feel like I've done my best and I wasn't complicit in hurting people. That is important to me

Using credits (or lackthereof) as a form of social punishment, threat or reward can never be the result of a healthy corporate culture.

The people who will most profit from this quality and connection-sapping technology being assumed to be inevitable, want you to give up on pushing against it today, by believing that fight is already over.

Don’t give in.
Don’t be fooled.
Don’t accept the thing already making our medium worse.

I'm going to start putting together some free info and resources for indie game devs looking to self-publish. I see a lot of people making simple mistakes, and hear a lot about being overwhelmed by what they need to do.

Do folk have specific self-publishing questions they'd want answered?

Wondering how much we truly faceoversaturation of art/games... And like yes I think that to an extent it's probably true, but also, maybe the ways to share said art/games and the spaces to invest/discuss/promote them just degraded to an unfathomable degree in a relatively short period of time

Many freelancers in the United States rely on ACA marketplace plans for their health insurance. In an industry that has already been working overtime to turn gamedevs into gig workers, freelance and contract devs are about to get even more squeezed. This is unacceptable.

Already run into kids who, when seeing my wildlife photos, exclaim 'that's AI'
I spotted this on Mastodon and I find it horrible, not least for the speed with which this has happened.

Yes and yet several European countries are embracing a far-right worldview that would burn these policies to the ground, so let’s be not be smug or complacent here - particularly as Mamdani‘s pro-immigration stance is radical by European standards.

i empathize with the devs who are scared to share their thoughts or experiences, and i respect their decision to do so privately. doesn't it suck that some of us are so scared to come forward for fear of losing out on jobs or facing harassment?

what does that say about how our industry?

perhaps the most egregious thing that happened with the Future Class was when The Game Awards took money from Old Spice in the name of the FC & simply... pocketed it

it wasn't used to fund Future Class initiatives, it wasn't used to help lift marginalised developers

they just profited from us

I have developed such a profound distaste for "older man mentors younger girl" narratives. I'm usually pretty neutral when it comes to most tropes, but this one I can't stand anymore
