I don't agree with this completely.
I think imitating can be a gateway to innovation.
You see something, you do it the same way as someone else, then you tweak it to work better for you and/or create something new to better serve you/the people you work with.

We went out for a family dinner the other night and somehow we ended up talking about the picture book below. It brought back so many nice memories as we recalled the times we read it to the boys and the great conversations that cam from it.
