It's been an incredibly frustrating day with Vancouver passing an austerity budget that will cut funding for important public services and infrastructure and fire hundreds of staff, even after over 600 speakers, including myself, speaking out against the harm that this budget will do to our city.

Did a model of the Yukon results under different voting systems. Under instant-run-off voting (the version of ranked ballots that won the plebiscite tonight), rankings are only counted in 7 ridings, and no seats change hands from them. Mayo is within 3 votes.

This isn't going to be popular on this platform, but I think cutting corporate tax rates to Scandinavian levels of 20-22% (from 25.98%) would be a good policy. We need growth to fund government and improve our standing of living.

The issue isn’t free votes. It’s forcing BC’s entire right-wing spectrum into one party and expecting stability.

Proportional representation would end the need for every conservative to crowd into one tent and let them champion different ideas without heavy-handed leadership.

Fair Vote Canada board member Ryan Campbell joined CFAX Victoria to talk about BC’s electoral reform consultations.

93% of submissions called for proportional representation. The message from the public is clear: make every vote count.

Why can't anyone get along in Langley?! The Township isn't just clashing with the City, but it's also with their animal welfare provider, who've just been given a 30 day notice of termination. It would be funny if it wasn't going to get innocent animals euthanized www.lapsbc.ca/statement-fr...

Ok, I've been pondering some of the ways that BC's new housing minister @christineboyle.bsky.social might build on the expansive work championed by @ravikahlon.bsky.social and her previous work as a @cityofvancouver.bsky.social councillor.

So - here's a first draft: 🧵

Housing policy can get wonky, but I'm a big believer that, fundamentally, it's about values.

So I'm especially happy when an article that quotes me does so in a way that highlights and contrasts the values underlying these discussions, like this one (from May last year):

Trump started this dispute but since Canadian exports to the US compliant with CUSMA are exempt to current Trump tariffs, it was fair for Canada to do the same on retaliatory tariffs for US goods also under that FTA. Still holds a line, restarts talks, & shows CUSMA still has value to the Americans.

Apparently when you ask Dale Smith to explain why gerrymandering is bad he gets mad and blocks you.
August 22, 2025 at 5:03 PM
Remember that according to Dale it's also a logical fallacy to look at the results in aggregate, and each riding's election is completely independent of each other. So apparently gerrymander is also impossible.

If only there was some sort of organization dedicated to making sure laws are enforced. Some sort of force to police the law. A police force if you will.
two scandals here: VPD fuelled panic over stranger attacks even as they fell dramatically in 2022, and then refused to release records about them for 14 months, which is against the law
