People rarely get a proper scope of what success means in the face of statistics.

For example, a writer earning 500$ / Month is in the top 10% of published/self-employed writers in terms of income.

This means that to "fully earn a living from writing", you need to be at the top 5% if not higher.

Having to write when you're not feeling inspired is like that MitM scene where Reese takes the meal out of the oven with his bare hands.

Only to find the mitts after having set down the dish.

After the many horrors beyond our comprehension, modern writers have to contend with the reality that any dystopia they write will be taken as guidelines by someone, potentially even within their lifespan.

All systems exist as a series of guidelines and rules that can and will be corrupted over time.

The only protection against this degradation is through constant care. But above all, the best way to make sure a system is not corrupted is to ensure the people in it are not corrupt.

There is something beautifully horrifying about taking a step back and truly analyzing the fundamentals of your work.

It opens the doors towards growth, towards appreciation of nuances you never even knew were there.

But it also takes away some of that innocence, some of that thoughtless impetus.

That feeling you get, when you reach the ending of a great series/book, and you need to take a moment to just process it all.

Sometimes the best move is to step back and spend some time on your own reading good stories.

When deciding on deadlines for the first time, try to make some mental maths of how long it will take to finish.

Then multiply by four.

And if it's a project of a scale you've never done before, double that.

There's a fundamental difference between "I do it for fun" and "I do it because I have to".

Do not make that jump without being sure it's meant for you.

It's 100% perfectly ok to not monetize everything you enjoy.

Studying political/military/social movements in history is very useful for two reasons.

One, it gives you a proper sense of grounding. What would and wouldn't make for reasonable responses/reactions/events.

Two, it showcases just how wildly unbelievable real-life events can be.

Protests are rarely used in stories because they're seen as "passive" and with little to do other than be in the way of someone running through an area.

"How do I write this *thing* well?"

Look up any story that might contain "similar thing".
Copy "similar thing".
Find out why OG author did "similar thing" the way they did.

Rewrite "similar thing" into "thing".

Everything following that is practice.

I know it's tempting, but never argue with your readers.
Instead, ask them to clarify, and consider their response as data.

Best case, they reveal something you missed or could improve on.

But if you argue, you end up with nothing to gain but frustration.

Most help on how to beat writer's block only addresses the "I don't know what to put after this" kind of block.

Type 2 is "I don't know how to resolve this".

To solve it, treat it like a puzzle. List the core rules.
And if it's unsolvable, change one rule at a time to get perspective.

'Architect VS Gardener' was the old writing spectrum.
With the advent of the internet, we now have 'Hermit VS Socialite'.

Are you the kind of author that can write a whole book without anyone's input? Or do you find it impossible without frequent feedback?

The five stages of #writing:

-Denial: This is the best story ever
-Anger: Why did I ever think this was good?
-Bargain: If I just change this one thing, then it will be good
-Depression: The idea was never good, it's unsalvageable
-Acceptance: This is as good as it gets, and that's ok

Then repeat

In (fiction.live) a writer can "go Live", and effectively write their story/quest in real time in front of a live audience (who they can even poll to pick what happens in the story).

You need to be a special kind of insane to write there.
I believe all authors should try it at least once.

Being a writer means that, sometimes, the characters yank the wheel from your hands and try to steer things towards a more reasonable place.

Which is cheating.

So I make sure to alter the map, and the road, and the terrain.

Good luck driving to safety now, suckers!

In #royalroad there is writing for fun, and writing for a living

For anyone trying to enter the later category, always remember that the first 2 months of any new story are where it lives or dies

If the story doesn't reach Rising Stars by then, RR's algorithm will bury it

-The start
-The middle
-The ending

There is something innately beautiful about spending a week writing several chapters for a story, and then deleting them because the plot direction just didn't work out.

It's like taking a wrong exit and now you get to spend 30min circling through that scenic tiny town in the middle of nowhere.
