Nobody is ensnared, per Rule As Written. The area becomes Difficult Terrain (movement halved) and the creature moving into the area takes 2d4 damage per 5 feet of travel.
The rider will remain uninjured for as long as the horse stays upright. I'd probably impose an Animal Handling check, though.
