New arrival. Hussein Abdulsater’s major new book. Al-Jahiz as a theologian and social empiricist, and how that alters received 3/9th century intellectual history. It was a pleasure to edit this masterful work. edinburghuniversitypress.com/series-edinb...

For those who haven’t heard, I’m happy to say I’ve edited, annotated and introduced the first scholarly English version of Kitab al-tawhid, translated by Tahir Uluç. Our edition not only makes al-Maturidi’s theology accessible but allows his book to take its place as a classic of world literature.

My survey of "medieval" Islamic theology (history and themes) has been published by Routledge. Good for beginners, yet of interest to scholars too, and great for reading lists. The resource is not very accessible, so here you go: ramonharvey.com/wp-content/u...

Trying this site out again based on rumours that it is increasingly better for academics than the other. Most of my teaching and research at the moment is on Islamic theology (esp. Maturidism), especially in dialogue with analytic and phenomenological philosophy. Would be nice to connect/reconnect.

It does not follow from us contingently existing and God necessarily existing that we do not truly exist. We exist in a state of dependency on God, and at a location in space and time. These aspects of contingency are negated from God in His necessary and timeless existence.

There’s a kind of online Islamic theology account. Usually completely or semi-anon. Probably madrasa education or equivalent. Competent to excellent Arabic. Can argue the best school opinion from a dozen texts but struggles to make a historical or contemporary argument. Interesting phenomenon.
