Canada’s market may be small, but Canada’s losing control of our health data—fast.

Government oversight of sales, updated privacy laws, and Canadian or allied sovereign clouds are steps toward protecting our data.

But approval alone isn’t enough. Companies like AWS and Microsoft, which store Canadian health data, can be forced by the US CLOUD Act to hand over data, even from Canadian servers.

Germany’s StackIT shows what’s possible for true data sovereignty.

One solution? Require Canadian government approval for sales of companies handling sensitive data.

This could block risky foreign takeovers or enforce strict data protection terms, keeping control in Canada and ensuring economic benefits stay local.

Here’s the problem: if a company is U.S.-owned, Washington can compel it to hand over data—even if the servers sit in Canada.

And if Trump showed us anything, it’s that legal safeguards aren’t enough.

He’s wants NATO air defence systems out of Ukraine. Best way to achieve that is to force NATO to station them along its eastern border.
