Being a volunteer has it’s advantages, here is a short video I took yesterday. Be sure to come on out to IRM to see our Shay in action.

Wow it’s been a while since I posted here, anyway I’ve been busy at my museum doing various things, our Shay passed its steam test last weekend. Be sure to come on out and see it.

Wish they would allow me to share my longer videos as my best ones are more than 60 seconds long. Oh well here is a little video I took of a brass engine I purchase. Unfortunately the grey NYC cars are not mine

Whilst I’m disappointed with the election results today, at least I got my love of trains to distract me from whatever is going to happen in these next 4 years.

Again I apologize for the lake of activity, I’ve been very busy with volunteering at my museum and with life, I will try and be more active here when I can

I apologize for my inactivity, I’ve been very busy with my full time job and volunteering at my train museum but I’m still alive. I will try to be a bit more active on here when I can, meanwhile, here is a photo I took yesterday since we were having our vintage car show at my museum.

Built in 1935, this is a “butter dish” milk car, so called because of its unusual Art Deco-inspired shape. It was designed for hauling fresh milk inside of large glass-lined tanks. After the transportation of milk had switched to over-the-road trucking, this car was used to transport glue products.

Also from last weeks Saturday switching out of barn 3 was our Chicago Great Western X38 is a Russell snow plow built for clearing snow off of the railroad tracks. It is not powered, but rather was designed to be pushed by a locomotive. The shape allows it to push snow off to either side of the track

On Saturday, some stuff was moved outside of barn 3 as some track work needs to be done, one of the pieces of equipment brought out is #7, built by Baldwin in 1926 for the Public Service Co., of Northern Illinois at Waukegan, IL. It was the first steam locomotive donated to the museum in 1961.

Here is a unique one, this 1947 Dodge 4-door sedan was equipped with special wheels that rode on the tracks. It was used by Milwaukee Road officials to travel along the railroad. This car is a precursor to today’s “highrail” pickup truck, widely used by American railroads. It was retired in 1961.

Had a fun time working with our C&NW Wrecker Crane on Saturday at the museum.

Our Illinois Central 2-6-0 3719 is starting to look much better now than when it first came into the shop.

Here are my thoughts on this years Super Bowl…. Let’s GO CUBS!!!

Couldn’t go to the museum today so I went to my museum yesterday after work to work on some model trains.

Also our museum got a new passenger car back on Saturday.

Milwaukee Road “Buffeteria” dining car 126 built in Milwaukee in 1948. Originally the car was a streamlined 48-seat diner with a full kitchen. In 1964, the railroad rebuilt car 126 and two others as “Buffeteria” dining cars.

Sorry for the long absence everyone, the bad winter weather has kept me away from the museum but on Saturday I finally managed to head out to IRM. My first task of 2024 was cleaning superheater units in the smokebox of 1630. It’s a dirty job but I love doing it.

The blades function off of a stationary steam engine inside the rotary. Since a rotary is like a steam engine inside a box, the boiler is only meant to power the rotary blades itself, the rotary needs locomotives to push it thru the snow. Shown here is a photo showing it without its side walls up.

With all the recent snow we had recently. I decided to share these photos I took of our cosmetically restored Union Pacific Rotary Snowplow in its natural environment… Snow!!! Although it’s currently not operational it’s still an impressive sight after a lot of hard work we put into it.
