Not my 16 yr old critiquing development in Tosa. “If they cared about the community, they wouldn’t build $2,000 apartments that only rich white people can have. We need to make it more affordable and have diversity.”

In my PD office, I am older than most of my colleagues. I also have been a lawyer for longer. But I am new to criminal defense. (Yay career shift in your 50s!)

If someone asks me a question because I appear to be an adult, I often refer them to a more “adultier” adult.

I know I am not dying. And I know my job cannot actually kill me. But today I believe that it just might.

I made cookies for dessert. I sat on the couch while they were cooling and got trapped under a cat. He has been sleeping for an hour. I want cookies but you never wake a sleeping cat 😭😭

teensy tiny correction: the government does not have to provide you an attorney for immigration court, so you should make arrangements with one now. Just someone you can call if you get yoked up by ICE.

If you ask for one, they will not and do not have to provide you one.
SHARE WIDELY.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS.

With mass deportations starting today across the country, it is vitally important - for both citizens and non-citizens - to know your rights.

You have the right to remain silent. Assert it. You have the right to a lawyer. Ask for one.

How much tea is too much tea?

And does your answer change if you had to go to work in a polar vortex?

Today my daughter sent me a picture of her and her friends standing on frozen Lake Mendota. I have similar pictures from a million years ago. I love that connection.

Child 1 came home from college Tuesday night. Wednesday night I told Child 2 dinner was ready and I called upstairs to let Child 1 know as well.

Child 2 was shocked. “When did she get home?”

Reader they were in the house together for 24 hours and he had no idea.

This is so important. I’ve been to events where tap water was my only option.
Note for the upcoming holiday season,,, some of us are on a sobriety journey and mocktails or non-alcoholic beer options make a big difference 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Word of the day is ‘sequaciousness’ (16th century): the slavish and reckless following of another person in matters of thought or opinion.

You know how you say “I’m old enough to be your mom” to a coworker because they are like 15+ years younger.

Today a coworker informed me she was born in 1999. I turned 30 that year. I was married. I legit could be her mom.

The first known use of singular “they” is so old that not only does it pre-date singular “you,” it wasn’t even spelled with a “th”

When William and the Werewolf, in 1375 CE, used singular “they,” it was spelled with a Thorn

I made a mid career shift to the Public Defender’s office. The amount of times I say “this is bullshit” on a daily basis is astonishing. People are getting screwed over left and right with their freedom on the line.

I know everyone says this, but the amount of STUFF libraries have available digitally is just breathtaking. My library system here in Baton Rouge has thousands of Udemy courses available. And they're free! They're so free.

Libraries are cool. Librarians are cool. Support your libraries.

Lots of people still don't know about this feature! It's very, very good. Reduces dunks and pile-ons, and hey, even just people being annoying or missing the point when they quote.

📢 1.90 is rolling out now (3/11)

Every post now has the ability to “detach” quote posts.

Quote posts are great but sometimes they’re used to dunk on people. This tool gives you a quick way to remove your post from the quote, reducing the unwanted attention that a quote might bring.
