But this was spring and a number of people were out hunting those folding flyers. You know which ones. They're still around and they've been around forever. So these hunters saw it first. Well they were transfixed because this was what the light did. It first gave the look of some new star, maybe a nova. But it got brighter till it was just too bright for a star.

This version continued some new techniques I developed on the first version. But it wasn't getting to the story, and I discovered a really annoying sentence fragment only when I was done lol. Might mine this one later for its world-building. 2/2

I wrote two versions of III . 3 . I that I decided not to use. This version I didn't like for various reasons related to the narrative, but I felt really happy with how it reads. 1/2

People weren't named but hives were named. In waking life people would form ad hoc groups, determing their reproductive role [sic] every season. From the abstract: "a heavenly steed, soaring across the skies is a two-movement work for orchestra. The title derives from the Chinese idiom. Chinese people use this idiom to describe a bold, imaginative, unconstrained style. This work intends to create an elevated and cohesive atmosphere connecting two superficially unrelated objects: sky lanterns as a symbol of fortune and the Forbidden City, a palace complex located in Peking (Beijing). The first movement is inspired by a story during the Three Kingdoms period (from 220 to 280 AD). A military strategist of one of the three kingdoms, Zhuge Liang (also known as Zhuge Kongming), invented the sky lantern. When the other Kingdom's army surrounded him in a town, he made sky lanterns to transmit messages to manage an escape from the siege, and he succeeded. Since then, the sky lantern has symbolized hope for success and fortune. Thus, this movement intends to deliver a prayer for hope. It begins with a slow-growing motive decorated by the ostinato in the high register to create a serene atmosphere. The middle section takes inspiration from Igor Stravinsky's "Infernal Dance" from “Firebird”, while reimagining it as if this music is written for a video game by featuring repetitive motives and limited polyphony. The driving and relentless section proceeds with the off-beat melodies and disturbs the previous tranquil section. Increased rhythmic pulses and an intense and dramatic atmosphere aims to throw the audience in a place as if a mighty force traps them. Along with the ascending stepwise motive truncated at the end of the middle section, the beginning slow-growing motive returns. The coda depicts sky lanterns flaming while flying to the sky. "
