My three and a half star hearted review of Friendship: So I'm trying to figure out why the "Tim Robinson character" guy is so fun for so long when I binge ITYSL but so punishing for an hour and a half here, and I think it's that when you're watching sketches the characters reset and there's a new thing happening. He's not a real person with an interior life and other real people who have to live with him and his decisions. I haven't physically reacted to a movie like I did here in a while. An almost genre-defining entry in Detestable Worm Cinema. Robinson has a real talent for portraying how flat and pathetic and empty most anger is. There's a lot of really sharply written and performed kinds of Guys in here. I laughed a lot. It's just the at when you make a movie about a guy who's a tough hang, it's tough to hang with him.

The poster for Friendship (2024) Rudd's character was originally named Brian in the script. When Rudd was cast, he requested that this be changed to avoid confusion with his Anchorman character, named Brian Fantana, and personally suggested the name Austin.

At first I was like “oh come the fuck on guy” but I read the article and it’s a very sweet, largely self-effacing piece about how you can’t predict where life will take you and being open to change that THR stuck an inflammatory headline on yayyyyyy

I feel bad because there’s a lot of sincerity and passion and some REALLY fun model work near the start, but it really is just so boring
My two star hearted review of The Gifted (1993): There's a thing you encounter a lot when you read a lot of stuff written (and directed as well, in this case) by crackpots where the story they want to tell you is interesting to them because they believe it happened TO them but they don't know how or just don't care to make it compelling to other people. It would be really exciting to find out you have a place in this grand mythology where aliens wage ancient proxy wars for earth using African psychics and Christianity (in what feels like a heavy handed allegory for Black generational trauma stemming from slavery but seems to be at least partially something Audrey King Lewis actually believes), and you would probably want to have a lot of long conversations about what that means, but god is it tedious to watch from the outside.

Rock of Ages is one of the worst movie musicals of the 21st century, but Tom Cruise is so unnecessarily locked in as Stacee Jaxx, he feels like he wandered in from a much heavier movie. He took the role because he’d never done a musical before and then took it WAY too seriously. It rules.
