Ex-official explained this in a way that will stick with me forever: Within fire departments, the EMTs are overworked and underpaid and don’t have time to advocate for policy. The fire chiefs, on the other hand, have a lot more time on their hands. So fire response, not medical, dictates policy.

Everyone saying ”giving that essay a zero was probably too harsh, I would have given it like a 70% to avoid conflict” are perfectly demonstrating how the us education system has been successfully dismantled.

Today is the 70th anniversary of Rosa Parks' arrest. Six myths: 1) She wasn't old or tired. 42 years old that day, she had a "life history of being rebellious" & had spent two decades helping to turn the Montgomery NAACP into a more activist branch alongside ED Nixon and Johnnie Carr.

Yet another long feature article about political violence that refuses to acknowledge the basic reality that right-wing violence is far more common than left-wing violence.

Look at these rates. This is (partially) what it takes to make sure that you have a robustly funded functional public sector that can broadly deliver on matters of public good.

Someone once told me that the difference between tragedy and comedy is that in both cases bad things happen but in the former only the audience can see them coming. This tragedy started with John Henry and just keeps coming. Thread: www.theguardian.com/environment/...

can you believe there’s a 70+ year old bird out there flying around in the wild?

Now that it's over, it's unbelievable that anyone got to live in a world with "photographic evidence". Like it's an exploit that the devs are finally patching out. Humans were not meant to see things without actually seeing them
this image was generated with google's latest nana banana pro tool. we have no idea how bad it is about to get.

Disney made a 20 movie pseudo arc over the course of 10 years and crushed the landing with Infinity Wars and Endgame.

Star Wars couldn’t plan for a 3 movie trilogy. Insane. I need a documentary about it, I guess.

i am looking at chicago public schools student enrollment data, something that strikes me with a dataset that is 24 years worth of data is you can really see the rise of charter schools and selective enrollment high schools

the neighborhood high schools really became churn factories

for example
my favorite data files in Chicago is called the tarantula file 🕷️

it's a file that chicago public schools made to understand how many kids live inside a school attendance boundary, how many attend that school + how many come from outside a boundary

form follows function, buildings follow kids

I dunno man it just really seems like American universities have lost the plot over the past 30 years or so and while I too love college football and basketball, the people making key decisions at them don't seem to care about their educational mission at all

American vs Yankee vs USian isn't about what we call ourselves, its about what other people call us. In that context, Yankee really is the best of bad options

the problem isn't LED lights, though, it's DOT having far less strict standards for beam pattern & glare than Europe (whose regulations are followed by much of the rest of the world). The allowed height of the lamps and the allowed height of the beam is much lower in the ECE standard.

if there's a reason to keep up the "tribunals for all involved" discourse one such reason it is to put in stark relief how far away some of the Dem politicking is from the mood on the ground
eric swalwell said on msnow that a major goal of a dem majority after the midterms would be for ice masks to come off and badges to come out, this is insufficient
