No views from today's trail run, but I scoped out the last unknown-to-me section for my next race #Ouray50. Just 21 more days to prep and rest before embarking on what is most likely going to be an absolute type 2 #sufferFest. Psyched.

✌️I'm Justin, an assistant
professor of Env. Sci. @ CO Mesa U.

These days I mostly teach, but my research is on stream communities, focusing on food webs and body size distributions (aka size spectra, individual size distributions).

Last Saturday, I had the privilege of waking up in the dark, watching the moon set over Moab, the sun rise over Castle Valley, feeling the wind rip at 12,000 feet, and was back in camp to watch the peaks alight with alpenglow.
In between, I ran 50 miles and climbed >11k ft.
Great day. #trailRunning

Saw a Colorado Hairstreak (Hypaurotis crysalus) today on its host plant (Gamble oak, Quercus gambelii). This is Colorado's official state butterfly!

Fantastic day of #trailRunning today. I don't have a ton of efforts on this local beast of a run, but I was able to shave off over 40 minutes on my previous PR. Incredible what nearly a year of consistent, structured training can do. If only I'd started earlier!

Beautiful day for a #trailRun in the San Juan mountains of Colorado. I need to work on my loose, technical downhill running. Splits going up were almost faster than my downs 😂

Fun early season day in the mountains. Trails up high were still a little too snowy and sloppy to connect my originally intended route. Luckily, this area is so stunning that even spending ~6 miles on the roads is quite enjoyable. #trailRunning #mountainRunning #ultraTraining

"With great power comes great responsibility."

There comes a time when each of us must step into the role of reviewer 2.

I believe my time has come.

Beautiful day for a long run/power hike in the mountains. I even got graupelled on!

Good morning #SFS2025 and congratulations to all the 5k fun runners!

It must be #Dobsonfly season. I just spent 3 days on the Colorado River and we saw no less than 5 #Hellgrammite larvae crawling on the bank. These aquatic species dig a burrow in the bank to pupate before the short-lived adults emerge to reproduce. #AquaticInvertebrates #streamEcology

Last night a white-lined sphinx moth (Hyles lineata) was visiting our freshly bloomed evening primrose (Oenothera caespitosa). Unfortunately I couldn't get a pic with the moth, but the blooms are still here this morning.

What a time to be alive. (And what a time to not be flying.)

Nice day for a long run. Started out in a blizzard, ended up cruising back in the sunshine.
Since the spring race i was planning on doing sold out, the next few weeks are going to be fairly chill before I start a training block for my August event. #TrailRunning

Stormzy was setting the vibe and giving me life on this stellar #trailRun today

Perfect day for a #trailRun through the high desert 🏜️

Unfortunately no landscape photos, but trust me when I say it was nice.

I know it's a bit late for #garWeek , but I spotted (wink) a spotted gar at the Denver Zoo a few days ago

I was in a bit of a funk all day (post holiday blues, funding rejection letter, no daycare parenting exhaustion).

My #Ultra #trailRunning training plan called for #hillSprints today, and I hit them so hard I thought I was going to puke.

That's a wrap. This was a big #TrailRunning / #running year for me and the first time I broke 1,000 miles. Feeling motivated right now to take on some races next year greater than 50k. We shall see how it goes!

New single malt scotch received as a holiday gift. I'm still developing my ability to pick out specific flavors but this one overall is well rounded with sweet and fruity notes with a lingering peaty finish. Good flavor at a great price point, I'll likely be adding this to my regular rotation.
