We have a diverse group of people at our school, including students and parents who are introverted, neuroatypical or otherwise have trouble expressing themselves. • How can we better facilitate participation for all? • What accommodations can we make?

Sent text messages saying: I don't get what I need when I make sure everyone is comfortable. But then if I make anyone uncomfortable they get to tell me *that's* why I'm not getting what I need. But in fact nothing I can do will get them to meet my needs bc they refuse to believe I exist (as who l actually am) bc my existence is a threat to some deeply cherished belief they hold of themselves

Last weekend I had a meeting with a school trustee. Next day I sent this email.
Hi, I am proud of myself for setting up a meeting, knowing the risk I would be taking. It wasn't a free choice, but I did my best. I am happy that I communicated • two actionable suggestions, • several general concerns, • one or two soapbox positions, and • further repeatedly stated that I am not expecting drastic immediate action, and the reason I was forced to escalate things was because I never received responses that indicated staff was on the same page as the school's own language of inclusion. The experience was awful for me, distressing, and I am still finding new ways it was upsetting. Assuming that discriminating against autistic people is not anybody's goal: non-autistic staff and community members need to Start Taking Steps To Learn How Their Natural Communication Rules and Patterns are Harmful to autistic people. As far as I can tell, I am not believed when I say this. Or it is not seen as important. I'm not sure. I have no explanation for how I can say the same thing so many times and still find myself being dehumanized or forced to perform. It is unfair (ableist, discriminatory) for ... to presume neurotypical extroverted participation. I recognize that staff was not aware of this problem. I recognize that being told it is a problem doesn't automatically tell them what to do. Yet, I am not even seeing signs of acknowledgment or concern. My ability to sit through extremely distressing situations should not be taken as a sign that they are not distressing. Other people's inability to point out these problems should not be taken as a sign that other people are not distressed. I hope this email is surprising and feels like it comes out of nowhere. I hope you thought the meeting went well and are taken aback. The alternative would be worse, in my opinion. But if this is a surprise, I hope you find a way to not reject or dismiss or merely Tolerate it. I hope you think maybe you should look into it. There is a lot written about disability justice, about neuroinclusivity... there are videos, tiktoks even, that are really helpful... all of them produced by actual autistic adults. Think about the ways people require and expect a certain type of performance before they will listen to someone. Consider the possibility that this performance favors one neurotype at the great expense of others. I truly think I have given enough of myself and enough information for "well-intentioned" people to carry on without me. I am fine to answer questions, for now, and if you want me to update you with new issues I can, but not so that I can be told they are not issues or so that I can be helped in any way. (For instance, the arrangement of the Monday trip I find pretty offensive/upsetting.) Thank you for your time, -piper-

Anhedonia often strikes those who give more than they take. These individuals are the helpers—the ones who carry others' burdens, solve problems, and rarely, if ever, ask for help themselves. Over time, this imbalance—pouring energy out without replenishment—can lead to emotional burnout. And when the reservoir of joy runs dry, disorders like anhedonia or even full-blown depression can take hold.
