I don't think it's easy but there are readily available counterexamples to all those points

there are many people making a living now through covering subjects their audience doesn't know a thing about or care about going in because the audience trusts the creator has a good reason to pick the topic and will have interesting things to say about it. jacob geller for one indie game example

everyone can see how disingenuous you are fyi

I like those types of settings too and they may be the best call for some types of games, but maybe not when the design mission is explicitly to present the player with a challenge that seems oppressive and impossible to then maximize the joy of overcoming or subverting it (on the game's own terms)

back then I don't think fromsoft knew what a soulslike was or what exactly they were going for either lol, but they found out that they were onto something, what it was, and how to dig into it after that

personally, I think a separate exploration mode where enemies don't interact with the player would let people who could only enjoy the game that way do so without tempting most players who can and would better enjoy dealing with the difficulty, but 'easy mode' reads as too equivalent when it's not

the problem is that the people I'm talking about are having less or no fun because they were readily presented that option. I do think people who need accessibility should have it and I think that should be a heavy priority in every part of the design process, but it's not 100% innocuous like that

the harder a game is and the easier it is for the player to bypass the difficulty, the more likely they will do so in a way which detracts from their experience overall. I think labeling options as "accessibility" helps but there are still players who will jump the gun to use them and be worse off

yes, I don't trust them to open-endedly choose the best challenge for themselves (most won't) and I also don't want to put much burden to craft their ideal experience on the player because that's a designer's job

they're talking as if the dlc won't turn into hollow knight 3 anyway

as it happens I started an elden ring nightreign modded character who specializes in finding buff items and vaping them out to buff the whole party. we definitely need to see this kind of thing in a big, mainline title though

pretty sure the main appeal of superheroes for most people is as a power fantasy and in that sense they have a lot in common with cops
