You better believe that I’m going to be loud if you think using ‘Jap’ to talk about people from Japan isn’t casual racism. If you’re going to keep arguing it isn’t after you’ve been shown why, you’re either terribly ignorant, or comfortable with your racism.

Ok Scottish or Scottish adjacent people I know ( @squilkie.bsky.social , @bethanyblack.bsky.social , @soozuk.bsky.social for instance): what the hell are Neeps?

Let me introduce you to two Ukrainian sumo rikishi (wrestlers). Left is 獅司 / Shishi ( Сергій Соколовський/ Serhii Sokolovskyi) and the one of the right is 安青錦 / Aonishiki (Данило Явгусішин/ Danylo Yavhusishyn). Both are currently in the top division of professional sumo in Japan.

I just saw a drongo on another social media platform demand that superhero movies should turn the clock back 20 years to when ‘the scripts were good’. So I googled ‘superhero movies 2005’…

My Christmas haul. (Technically I haven’t got the Science Cats dress from Svaha USA yet; I got Christmas Money, so I ordered it today. That is not me in the photo.)

The WW2 last book my high school library had that got me into WW2 history was The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. While Gen & the books about Sadako introduced me to the Pacific theatre of war, it was Anne Frank’s diary that introduced me to the Holocaust and the European theatre of the war. 🧵👇🏽

Volume 1 is about Gen and his family’s life in Hiroshima, in the last few months of WW2. There is little food to go around & life is made extra hard because his dad speaks out against the war. Then the atomic bomb is dropped on the city. Vol 2 Is about the immediate days after the atomic bombing. 🧵👇

While the main character Gen is a fictional character, many of his experiences in the multi-volume manga are based on Nakazawa’s own experiences, or that of people he knew. In 1993, only the first two volumes had been translated into English, but all 10 are now in English. 🧵👇🏽

The next book is The Day of the Bomb (Sadako Will Leben!) by Karl Bruckner. This is also about Sadako Sasaki, and from my memory is closer to the truth. I haven’t read it since I was 13; it’s a lot easier to get one’s hands on Corr’s book than this one. 👇🏿

After Sadako’s death, her classmates fundraised around Japan to have the Children’s monument built in the Hiroshima Peace Park with a statue of Sadako standing upon the top, holding a paper crane. (My photo) 🧵👇

We’ll start with Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Corr. This is the story of Sadako Sasaki, who was 2 years old when the atom bomb was dropped on her home town of Hiroshima on Aug 6, 1945. She was unhurt at the time, but developed leukaemia when she was 12 from the radiation.🧵👇🏽
