New research from Pure Earth finds that traditional curing methods for lead-glazed ceramics in Mexico don’t stop lead from leaching into food—and may even make it more available, increasing health risks.

In 2024, Pure Earth’s Global Lead Program worked around the world to reduce childhood lead poisoning. We led 27 projects in 16 countries, administered over 2,500 blood lead tests, assessed 90 polluted sites, and tested over 400 household samples for lead contamination.

In 2021, Pure Earth tested 5,000+ consumer products from 25 countries, finding that 51% of metal cookware samples had dangerous levels of lead. To tackle this public health risk, Pure Earth launched the Lead Cookware Working Group, comprised of pollution experts from various global organizations.
