A short essay about myself, standing up for equality, and what it truly means to be blind.

Written for an essay contest by marveloptics.com
“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” - Hellen Keller. Like Keller and all people, I was blind in my innocence. I lived in a perfect society where all people lived in harmony. I lacked a vision, too, but I didn’t know because I was blind. The days between opening my eyes and finding a vision made me understand why so few people choose to see. It is far, far easier to retreat into complacency than to fight alone. Vision transcends the individual and it slays doubt with hope. As Keller once said herself, “nothing can be done without hope and confidence”. So, I proudly envision a world in which even animals are given human rights—an unapologetically hopeful culture where all who wish to contribute to society are welcome. A society that sees and uplifts all beings regardless of gender, race, sexuality, disability, or even species, where xenophobia has no place. I take comfort in not being alone in this dream. I hope you can take comfort in it too.
