What makes people furious is of course how the NYT uses its own wide discretion about what to pursue, what to beat the drum on, when to have qualms about running with something, and when to just put it out there. There’s the rules, and then there’s the rules about when you apply the rules.

I think a lot of the decisions along the way are defensible in the micro.
But, in the broader picture, NYT:
1) had an Epstein double-agent on staff
2) missed everything having to do with that story and the close links to a presidential frontrunner and later president
that's a massive failure

There were literally congressional hearings where whistleblowers in the insurance industry cried while discussing being forced by superiors to repeatedly illegally deny payment for lifesaving care in the run up to the passage of the ACA. That’s what republicans want us to return to.
