I try not to be a snob about contemporary forms of pop/pulp writing, but this idea that books should be meticulously indexed with dozens of hyperspecific tags just feels so grim to me.

As to the second point-ADA interpretation is state by state, and I don't know Oregon, but I am confident that the patio you show here wouldn't be considered ADA-compliant in any US state, and the design requirements I'm seeing from the city guide are pretty clearly geared towards accessibility.

Seems like a factor contributing to jack horners demise may have been a late 80s crackdown on Massachusetts head shops:

If you wanted to buy an older permutation of the jack horner sign it’s currently available on Etsy for a modest 48 grand

Weird bit of trivia I came across this morning—apparently after Boston’s Little Jack Horner Joke Shop went out of business in the 90s its inventory and sign were purchased by a propane and welding supply company who still sell fake dog poop etc. alongside their more conventional products.

One thing I found very interesting was to see Ellen Swallow Richards advocating 1000ppm of CO2 as a benchmark as early as 1914

I understand this is all a misogynist domination fantasy but it’s just so stupid. Oh, every time you look at a woman your glasses show you a picture of an imaginary naked woman? That’s cool, every time I look at a fire hydrant my glasses show me fucking your dad.

im not asking you to argue anything beyond your original claim: that manhattan, in the late 19th and early 20th century was “affordable.” is that claim true, or can you clarify what your benchmark is for “affordable?”

To keep track of all of this scientists have developed two systems: floral diagrams where the form of a flower is abstracted into more legible form…

so putting it all together: on the left we have a pin oak with an open branch angle and strong apical dominance. On the right is a zelkova with a tight branch angle and weak apical dominance. See the difference?

On top of phyllotaxy, you also have to think about the branch angle—the angle at which new shoots diverge from a stem. This is one of the most important factors that drives the mature appearance of a tree, especially combined with…

Others, like pieris, have a whorled arrangement, with many leaves emerging from one point.
November 6, 2025 at 2:15 PM
Other trees, like the serviceberry, have an alternate arrangement, with single leaves emerging on an opposite sides of the stem in an alternating pattern.
November 6, 2025 at 2:12 PM
The next important factor is “phyllotaxy,” which describes the arrangement of nodes along a stem. Maples, for example, have an “alternate” arrangement, with two leaves emerging directly opposite one another on a stem.
