i agree that gaza wasn't determinative overall (i think i saw some analysis that suggested it might have been in michigan but that obviously wouldn't have been enough) but it doesn't seem like the impact was primarily on turnout? dearborn and hammtrack did in fact see more votes for trump!
RFK's endorsement was the single most determinative single factor in the election, mostly because the impact of Gaza was to reduce turnout, not swing votes.
also this confirms my priors that RFK did, in fact, swing the election

i wish more left-liberal critics of the mainstream media, new york times critics especially, explicitly reckoned with how much the biden debate aftermath damaged their credibility

because frankly i tune out a lot of types of arguments i would have been very receptive to even two years ago
February 18, 2025 at 10:42 PM
i agree latinx is dumb but also literally fucking everyone agreed it was dumb four years ago, one ruben gallego tweet and it was over, yet latinos shifted *more* to the right afterwards

idk kinda just seems like people didn't like inflation

tbh i'm not sure that democrats completely leaning into the "we're no fun scolds" party image, even on something where the no fun scolds are right on the merits is what we need at all
it's not going to be the most pressing thing with *gestures* but dems becoming the party of sports betting bad is prob something they should get started on now
Exclusive: NBA player Terry Rozier has been investigated by federal prosecutors over whether he manipulated his performance as part of an illegal sports betting scheme

think i'm going to start crossposting my two month amtrak / greyhound multi-city cross-country vacation thread on The Other Site here too, might be a good way to start engaging more

unfortunately i'm already three cities in, will post screenshots of the tweets up to now before posting live here

i see people say stuff like this sometimes and it's all way too galaxy brained imo

the reason the january 6 ads in the 2022 midterms worked is because it played into what republican primary voters actually believed

when desantis tried this in real life, he tanked
there are ways to do it, you could’ve had more success keeping republicans home by airing ads in red districts “thanking” trump for giving us fauci and the vax than you won over by campaigning w liz cheney for example

tiktok ban + yondr pouch discourse is depressing to me because basic civil liberties shit that would have been pretty banal 5 years ago is now a Hot Take
January 10, 2025 at 8:13 PM
i really am making sure i don't get reverse polarized into dickriding the new york times but i'm sorry, i can't take much of the "mainstream media is republican propganada" stuff seriously when so much of that crowd said that skeptical press coverage of renominating an 81 year old was Emails 2.0
January 8, 2025 at 4:41 AM
this is all basically true imo; what i think the super hardcore pro-cooking people have right is that there is something kinda depressing and anti-human about this sort of "i just want to outsource this" logic when applied to literally everything in life
The reason the home cooking debate annoys me so much is that everyone who advocates for it either (1) has a household size of >1 (2) likes cooking (3) is happy eating repetitive food

All of these things are fine but my issue is that they don't acknowledge that these things aren't universal!

perpendicual stancilism: anger at burger prices is not indicative of a secret leftist majority but it's also not a media phenomenon, people just really want cheap burgers and no media will ever get them to value other things more
Weak Stancilism: media makes people focus on issues

Strong Stancilism: media creates new issues out of nothing

Superstrong Stancilism: media creates reality

Hyper-Stancilism: collective belief creates reality. The cosmos are dictated by the gestalt of trillions of tardigrades mad about inflation

does anyone still do this?
I still don't understand the Western obsession with boiling vegetables and calling it a day. No wonder your kids don't like them.
I am genuinely convinced that the reason vegetarian dishes in Western cooking get sneered at is because they just suck

It's basically all imitation meat (which means the crunchy bioessentialists will scream about it) or it's side dishes and this is something other cuisines do not struggle with

maybe i'm just Underestimating the Misogyny of the Electorate (TM) but i unironically think if it was a kamala + gretch ticket and one of them made a quip about jd vance using more eyeliner than both of them combined, they eke out the elction
January 3, 2025 at 1:15 PM
i'm very much team "this is all biden's fault first and foremost" but i am noticing some overcorrecting: continuing to use the media strategy that was initially intended to hide an 81 year old's rapid aging was a really bad choice that was at least partially in her control
There have been maybe like three “why didn’t Kamala…” takes I have seen where the answer was not some combo of “she did, you just didn’t hear about it” or “there’s no evidence whatsoever that would have been a good idea”
whole cottage industry of people slinging takes about What Went Wrong With Kamala without ever acknowledging that first on the list is inflation and second on the list is the Democratic Party's failure to heave Biden overboard sooner than they did
January 3, 2025 at 12:57 AM
i think there is more than zero truth of this but i also think that kamala did clearly benefit from seeming like she was any type of fun after that fucking biden debate
One thing I legit think hurt Harris is that Girl Fun is seen by many voters of both sexes as frivolous or illegitimate in a way Boy Fun is not. A president the lads would like to have a beer with is down to earth. A president the lasses would like to have a mimosa with is unserious.
Someone we talked to recently voted for Trump in part because Harris' campaign, with all the high-profile celebrities, seemed un-serious to her.

We can have all the judgments we want about how anyone could look at those two candidates and say Harris was less serious, but I think there's more there.

my most ghoulish quality is i'd love to have the obituary prewriter job in a newsroom
December 30, 2024 at 4:16 AM
disagree with this because i think the tendency to put people with luigi mangione-y views in the "right-wing" camp is sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy

that being said it is a little bit concerning that the apparently way you can bypass left-wing ideological policing is actual murder
Aside from the fact the guy who did this was a right winger who probably had a psychotic break, people have got to stop playing dolls with real people. Particularly bad because this dude is a murderer, but Jesus Christ where has dignity and decency gone.

i don't think that's true either but like... the shift among young men was in fact a shift from 2016 and 2020 too? and it seems like it might be worth expending some effort to make sure it's not a permanent one
A lot of lefty folks think a bunch of politically active negatively polarized women who voted against Trump three times are fascists eager to join the Trumpenreich SS but manly men who voted Republican every election since 1996 are one Rogan interview away from socialism. I don’t think that’s true.

not enough people are willing to say that new york times gave biden's age the exact right amount of coverage
December 23, 2024 at 5:12 AM
idk i'm pretty sure i read about all those statements in the new york times
December 23, 2024 at 5:09 AM
people who know more about this should probably correct me if it's false but it seems to me that AI art becoming an Issue has actively impeded its value as a "replacement" because all the people actually using it are pro-slop
there is nothing that conceptually stops AI art from being “real art”, it’s just that 80ish% of self described AI artists have insanely awful taste and no artistic skill (on some level they know this too). It can be used as a thoughtful tool to do interesting things. It just rarely is.
Even aside from the boosters, the people who are really into AI often have a sneering contempt for actual art and literature that others understandably find repulsive.

getting hammered tonight because "hypothetical future me" is the one getting a hangover
*hypothetical future kids with cancer. This was long-term research funding, not patient care for kids who have cancer right now.

so the question is, do you lay off 4 million people for a month in the hope of getting some money for cancer research?

i've also been really struck by the discrepency in my own personal life vs how other people view the world

including among people who basically share my politics, they're just saying "everything in modern life is a scam" instead of "the economy is collapsing because burritos are too expensive"
the best years of my life so (notwithstanding the disappointing political climate) are probably like… right now? this is insane to me.
