UCL Old Age Psychiatrist. Evidence-based treatments for dementia, psychosis, depression and anxiety in older people. Running for RCPsych President, see details here https://profrobhoward.com Still enjoying Twitter but here we all are.
ECT really does save lives. Our new SR/MA shows reduced mortality in people receiving ECT versus a comparator treatment. We didn't show a reduction in suicides but you probably wouldn't expect to be able to.

Layla. Not really happy on trains, even when she can travel First Class.

It’s a Van Gogh kind of morning in Peckham.

Yuto Satake returns to Japan today after a productive year at UCL. My son commissioned his artist friend to produce this to commemorate his visit and secret support for Layla to sit on forbidden sofas.

Don’t recommend having one of these under an open bedroom window. Mrs H and myself exhausted after a night of vivid and weird dreams.

Neighbours believe our house is haunted. Just taken this as I walked back after a walk with Layla. It does look a bit spooky…

Me in The Times today, talking about the dodgy presentations of Alzheimer’s drug data at AAIC.

Look again at the green lines for the early and delayed start groups. They appear to be converging towards 36 months. We are not told the 95% confidence intervals, but I bet they overlapped by 36 months. This would argue against disease course modification and any benefits from early starting Rx.

First, the comparison we are led to is between participants who received lecanemab in the first 18 months of the RCT and then opted for open treatment AND two unrandomised, uncontrolled historical cohorts. Second, what happened to the important delayed start trial, shown at last year's AAIC?
August 19, 2025 at 10:15 AM
What's not to like about this image, presented at AAIC and touted as showing lasting and expanding (maybe, even clinically important) efficacy of lecanemab treatment through 48 months of treatment - but only if you start treatment early and don't stop?
