There are moments in American history when silence becomes complicity, and higher education is standing in one of those moments right now. Educators are being monitored, pressured, and sometimes punished for speaking truths that institutions find uncomfortable.

I’m honored to endorse Dr. Pamela Pugh for State Senate in Michigan’s 35th District.

More than 50 elected officials, faith leaders, educators, and community advocates—including 10 state-elected education leaders—are standing with Dr. Pugh.

Join me on August 8, 2025 for the Not Like Us Conference.

In this moment of political pressure, I’ll be speaking from the heart about what it means to lead, to resist, and to stay grounded in truth when the world tries to silence you.

Heard about Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s passing. I met him at the NEA gala 6 years ago after tweeting him about which tux to wear. I ended up buying a white one last minute. When we met, he said, “That wasn’t one of the ones you sent me.” I was stunned—he’d seen it.

RIP Malcolm. real, unforgettable.

🚨 NEW in Diverse Issues in Higher Education 🚨

In my latest piece, I argue that it’s time to stop hiring caretakers and start demanding courage. Presidents and chancellors must be more than managers..

Wandered out onto the edge of the world today — the spit in Port Angeles. Wind in my face, driftwood at my feet, and the Sound stretching endlessly ahead. One of those places that humbles you with its quiet power. Just water, sky, and the rhythm of the tide reminding you to slow down.

Thoughts in Chile’s El Mercurio today: These actions are not just policy shifts; they are calculated political maneuvers rooted in ideology.

I sat at center ice and witnessed history.
Western Michigan won its first-ever NCAA hockey national championship.
6–2 over BU. Sixty years since our last natty in any sport.
Tonight wasn’t just a game—it was a legacy born.
I’ll never forget it.

Terrance Howard was talking about Hollywood, but the message applies to education leaders too: In the face of political hegemony, success without courage, purpose, principles, and integrity is hollow.
