For their final written assignment, I asked my students to reflect on the results of the 2024 election; on what the results say to them about the state of American politics and the electorate, overall. But most importantly, I asked them to tell me about one thing that gives them hope for the future.

The final substantive session of our politics of borders seminar today centered around @memomiller.bsky.social’s book, Build Bridges, Not Walls (2021). We know that this method inures the public to the violence of deportation because before Trump, Obama, Bush, and Clinton all said they were doing just this. Felons not families, bad immigrants. Destroyed lives and families.

Nobody should be deported.
He isn’t walking it back. Note what he says: “start with,” “begin there.” They’re going to start by rounding up cases who it will be hard for liberals, the media, etc, to defend. Then they’ll start testing to see how far they can go.

Full disclosure: I’m emerging from one of the darkest, most difficult, depressive episodes I’ve ever experienced that started in the fall of last year. Suicide prevention week was last week, I know; but it bears repeating as often as possible: check on your people, regularly, y’all. 🙏🏽
