This is great news, assuming no one plays games defining "lifespan". It's a shame, though, that NOAA had to repeat their bogus claim that their data alone "ensure gold-standard weather forecasting". In a field where global cooperation is key, we need more than platitudes from the agency.
🚨🚨 I've independently confirmed with @NOAA that they received a late-breaking notice from @DeptofDefense that SSMIS data will continue to flow for the remainder of the lifespan of the satellites. I will be updating my reporting shortly. Here is the official NOAA statement 👇

This is fucking insane. Closing these NOAA labs would obliterate our ability to observe, understand, and forecast the Earth System, from weather systems tomorrow to sea levels 50 years from now.

SSMIS is also used by forecasters to peer underneath the clouds of hurricanes to assess their location, cloud structure, and intensity. Losing SSMIS is another blow that will further degrade our ability to monitor and forecast hurricanes, just in time for the coming peak of hurricane season.
