Hhmm! I haven’t got a strict criteria, it mostly feels like more of a subconscious instinct. But I think certain shades can feel softer or harsher depending on the level of dithering. Specific textures like cloth or hair can benefit from it, whereas maybe a metal cube would be better with none?
