Matsutake grows abundantly in Western North America and is occasionally found here in northeastern North America. It's not very popular here, so I usually find it at specialty mushroom vendors, for about C$50/lb (¥12,000/kg).

To elaborate beyond what the character limit enforced: the Russian word for roe is also used to refer to the calf of your leg, presumably due to its resemblance to a roe sac. In Japanese, a common culinary metaphor for calves is the daikon, especially for pale, plump ones.
