So I’m thinking that during his time in the Army of Light, Deacon & his unit came across & battled a Dark Naaru. Although he tried to shield them all from it’s destruction, the explosion killed everyone but him and he was left with little shards of Naaru in his face like Zao from 007 Die Another Day
