Record of the day : Sketches of Brunswick East - King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard with Mild High Club
Is King gizzard jazz ? If you ever asked yourself that question, maybe it’s this album worth giving a try. Considering its collaboration with Alexander Brettin, leader of Mild High Club and prolific musician who majored in jazz studies - considering the name « Sketches of Brunswick East » as a reference to Miles Davis’s « Sketches of Spain » - or considering its constant use of odd time signatures and microtonal scales and melodies as leitmotivs, we could think « maybe it is..? ». In any case more jazz than a « Flying Microtonal Banana » published the same year. Anyway, you should know it was nominated for Best Jazz Album at the ARIA Music Awards in 2017, the year of its publication. Today’s record is Birdland by English band the Yardbirds. Released in 2003, this version is a reissue from 2016. This album is a tribute to former musicians from the Yardbirds, please welcome Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Paul Samwell-Smith, Top Topham and Keith Relf. Record of the day : Salad Days - Mac Demarco
If you are wondering what indie rock is or if you are looking for soft rock guitar ballades with lots of chorus and old Japanese synths, then this album is made for you. Originally from Canada, Mac Demarco recorded the whole thing on its own in his apartment in Brooklyn, which makes it sound so DIY and introspective. That’s how he described the making of his album, meditating and therapeutic. Anyway, released in 1014, Salad Days (his second album) has no reason to envy his following works for it is the most representative of Demarco’s sound and atmosphere to me. Record of the day : Aşk - Altin Gün
Today’s record is Aşk by Dutch-Turkish band Altın Gün. Released in 2023, it is the fifth and so far last album from Amsterdam based sextet. It was founded in 2018 and led by Bağlama player and vocalist Erdinç Ecevit Yıldız. Their psychedelic rock, also called Anatolian rock tributes 70s Turkish psychedelic rock. Since 2021, their sound was getting more into synth-pop and disco but contrasted with their live performances. Aşk marks a return to Anatolian folk-rock and to the band initial sound. Unfortunately the second vocalist Merve Daşdemir decided to quit the band this year. Record of the day : Troupeau Bleu - Cortex
Cortex - Troupeau Bleu, released in 1975 Really one of my favourite album ever, it’s the debut album by french jazz band led by Alain Mion. Psychedelic samba-jazz album which has a really unique sound, partly thanks to the atmospheric vocals by Mireille Dalbray. Since the early 2000, this album have been sampled several times by artists such as Tyler the Creator, Flying Lotus and MF DOOM which producer is still in lawsuit with Alain Mion concerning royalties. Record of the day : Welcome to Sky Valley - Kyuss
Today’s record is Welcome to Sky Valley by American band Kyuss from Palm Desert, California. Released in 1994, it’s their third album. Kyuss is considered a pioneer in stoner and desert rock. Partly composed of Nick Oliveri or Josh Homme, Kyuss led the path to other bands such as Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal or Fu Manchu. Josh Homme’s guitar tone, in drop tuning out of a bass amp is easily recognisable and give a special colour to the band sound. My favourite track must be « Asteroid », I simply love the main riff. Record of the day : Zombie - Fela Kuti and Afrika 70
Today’s record is Zombie by Nigerian musician and activist Fela Kuti and his band Afrika 70. Released in 1977, this album is a strong and brave symbol of rebellion against the military regime. The term “zombie” is used to describe soldiers obeying blindly to orders. This album resulted in the assault of Fela Kuti’s communal compound Kalakuta Republic by a thousand Nigerian soldiers which burned the place and destroyed his studio and tapes. Fela Kuti got severely beaten and his mother thrown from a second floor window and died. Record of the day : Hot Space - Queen
Todays record is Hot Space by famous British rock band Queen. Released in 1982, it’s their tenth album. It’s marking a direction shift using elements of disco, funk and even reggae. The album wasn’t acclaimed by the fans even tho it is including hit « Under Pressure » featuring David Bowie. The album was in general less popular partly due to ongoing backlash against disco music at the time. I actually like the direction of the album, it’s enjoyable to hear Queen doing something new. Record of the day : Comfort to me : Amyl and the Sniffers
Todays record is Comfort To Me by Australian band Amyl and the Sniffers. Released in 2021, it’s their second album. Their sound is often compared to 70s punk rock bands like the Stooges or the Damned. Singer Amy Taylor (“Amyl”) once said on the BBC : “In Australia we call poppers Amyl. Can P-Funk wake up the dead ? 💀
Maggot brain describes a worm-eaten brain. It’s reportedly the nickname given to Eddie Hazel, the band’s guitarist who basically made this album famous playing a to-come legendary ten minutes solo on the first self titled track. According to me, the music is so intense that the nickname suits him. However the story of the name could also refer to George Clinton finding his dead brother in a decomposition state, which would be tremendously more dreary. Precisely what we would think about by hearing the name of George Clinton, father of P-Funk collective, founder of both Funkadelic and Parliament, whose influence on 70s funk is massive. Today’s record is Tourist by french producer Ludovic Navarre aka. St Germain. Released in 2000, it’s his third album. It’s a combination of nu jazz, acid jazz, house and trip hop. Very popular in the US, it’s probably his most famous work. It includes a few samples and also features Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin. Record of the day : Trespass - Genesis
Today’s record is Trespass by Genesis. Released in 1970, it’s the second album by English progressive band. It is an interesting album, the first to be really progressive after they stopped working with their first producer Jonathan King. The album is the only to feature John Mayhew on the drums, although he was older and had more experience he felt unsure of his playing and left. He was replaced by Phil Collins. John Mayhew - the Pete Best of Prog - then had a totally different life as a carpenter in Australia. The album is also the last to feature guitarist Anthony Philips who founded the band with bassist Mike Rutherford in 1967. After leaving the band, Philips felt like he had to study music more and learned classical guitar, piano and orchestration. Record of the day : Frumpy 2 - Frumpy
Today’s record is Frumpy 2 by German band Frumpy. Released in 1971, it’s the second album by the progressive rock band from Hamburg. Led by Inga Rumpf, the quartet first played without a guitarist, which is unusual for a prog band. Organ parts were assured by Jean Jacques Kravetz. They achieved critical acclaim and commercial success with their first album All Will Be Changed in 1970 and toured supporting bands like Spooky Tooth, Humble Pie or Yes. On Frumpy 2, guitarist Rainer Baumann joined the line-up and composition process which gave more strength to their sound. Record of the day : Enter the Wu-Tang by Wu-Tang Clan
Today’s record is Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers by New York rap band Wu-Tang Clan. Released in 1993, it is considered an absolute classic since. Project was led and produced by RZA who used classic soul samples and clips from two 70s martial arts movies to create lean, menacing beats and atmospheres to evoke their gritty underground experience. These films also inspired the title (« The 36th Chamber of Shaolin » 1978). Record of the day : Traffic - Mr. Fantasy
Today’s record is Mr. Fantasy by English band Traffic. Released in 1967, it’s their debut album. The band was led by Steve Winwood after he left the Spencer Davis Group. Guitarist Dave Mason left the band after because he wanted to continue in the psychedelic rock direction when Winwood wanted a more elaborated sound. Winwood finally dissolved the band in 1969 to form Blind Faith with his friend Eric Clapton but after one album came back to Traffic.
