The (April) Fool at the End of Time he stood on the overpass with a sign that read: “the end is nigh-ish.” beneath it, in smaller letters: “bring snacks.” people passed him like bad dreams. a few honked. one threw a cheeseburger, which he caught with saintly precision and then fed to the wind. he wore a tutu over a business suit, a cracked watch around his ankle, and muttered to no one: “time’s a joke, but the punchline’s late.” they thought he was nuts. but when the sky turned the wrong color and the birds flew backward and all the phones screamed in Latin— he just sipped lukewarm coffee and said, “told you.” no panic. just a sigh, like he’d been stood up by the end of days too many times before. and when the light came— all teeth and static— he laughed. not because it was funny. but because what else can you do when the universe finally gets the joke and you’re the only one who knows it by heart?
