No, with advanced Alzheimer's they cannot communicate, may lose interest/be unable to feed themselves, organize thoughts, handle bathroom functions, often have swallowing issues too. It's dreadful. I've seen too many family members pass away from this.

I've never read it, but I saw the stage production twice. But I don't really think you will need a refresher to absolutely love the movie. I cannot wait for Part 2 next year!!
