Writing about history when I'm not gardening. #Chicago #HydePark #UglyDogs (iykyk)
People with real cameras who went out before it clouded up got spectacular shots, but this is what my phone captured looking north, then east. Then I went walking away from the lights to see if that helped and bumped into a local citizen. We decided to just walk away from each other. lol

BTW, the Halloween Street was beyond mobbed tonight. People were running out of candy by 6:30--and these are people that invest $1500 to $2000 on candy (not to mention all the decorations). It's relentless for four hours or until you run out. Someone asked me what you do when you can't handle it...

I lost an old friend yesterday. The purple beech tree that shaded almost the courtyard of the Hyde Park Shopping Center since 1960 is gone. It was ailing. Purple beeches have long lives but very large trees don't like living in concrete wells. I will miss it.

I'm afraid the original post didn't say who drew this, but it haunts me every Halloween.

There's a lot more disinformation in here than there used to be. Confirmation bias isn't good either.

I'm pretty sure that image is just AI slop so I'm using this one instead to illustrate the "struggle to get a beer."

According to the annexation agreement with the city of Chicago, Hyde Park was allowed to keep a version of their prohibition ordinance. A place could sell alcohol only if a majority in a defined area agreed. And here we are almost 150 years later. Map of the Prohibition zones (in white).

My talk on Wednesday noon has become German Brewers vs Hyde Park Temperance. It evolved from the realization that there wasn't a German community here where there ought to be one. But there were some German saloons selling German beer in the one area saloons were legal. Link in comments. #Chicago

One link between Japan and the South Side was a close relationship with the University of Chicago when it was a dominant player (and creator of) the Big 10. Baseball teams traveled between Japan and Chicago from 1910 to 1931. I loved this photo of the Waseda Univ players hamming it up in Chicago.
