The World is a strange place. But not that strange. Let's leave a little room in it for some common sense.

I used to live in Chicago.

As crazy as they look at first glance, they're really so much worse on closer examination, a menace to themselves and everybody around them.

I swear to you that I'm not making that one up. Somebody really was pushing that one, quite aggressively.

Then there were the people who thought that they could shoot down fighter jets using their hunting rifles.

This is Donald Trump's base of support.

They're a death cult that hates almost everybody living in a country that they claim to love, including anybody who would have the sense to not take part in one of their latest crackbrained schemes.

Like treating adverse side effects from a medicine by sticking one's feet in bleach.

OK, he got radiation poisoning, and went on to die at the age of 39, but ya know, when your number is up, your number is up, and what's that "agency" stuff dem libs keep talkin' about?

This, seriously, is how that crowd thinks.

As for that Engineerin' stuff, just watch a few Youtube videos and you'll be set, because if you have passion, you don't need none of that highfalutin' elitist "knowledge." Just look at how well that worked out for David Hahn, aka "the Radioactive Boy Scout."

Including alligators munching on little boy's skulls, so if you don't take your kids swimming in reptile infested waters, you obviously don't love Jaysus, and according to them, are probably just another devil worshipping "zionist, talmudic Jew."

That we're (according to them) supposed to burn down mosques and temples, with the worshippers still inside if possible, but never bother to get up and move if we think that a landslide is about to take out our homes, because everything is a part of God's great plan.

When asked about things like diseases running unchecked in a world without physicians, they'll insist that bacteria and viruses don't really exist, and by the way, neither do the Moon or the planet Mars, and that even if they did exist, wouldn't matter, because it's God's will.
May 8, 2025 at 5:08 PM
They hate Jews, they hate Catholics, they hate anybody who isn't a fundamentalist, so not surprisingly they hate all educated people, physicians and engineers included.
May 8, 2025 at 5:06 PM
They see people whose ancestors came here in the 19th century as being intruders who need to be thrown out, and yet, at the same time, they see the Native Americans as also being intruders who need to be "sent back to where they came from" (that being Siberia).
May 8, 2025 at 5:03 PM
The lunacy goes even further than that. Just drop by Gab, some time, and listen in. For God's sake, don't engage, just listen.

They don't just hate people of color. They also hate people who are of any descent other than so-called "founder stock."

How was poor Adolf to know any better, if nobody ever set boundaries with him?

With D. Trump as the abusive husband? 🤢

But we'll go on having a lot of corn, soybeans, sorghum and bluegrass, at least until topsoil depletion cuts down on the production of the first three.

That, and shockingly little of anything else.

Unless animals have developed the ability to teleport, that's not really an ecosystem. That's just a dodge to create the illusion, on paper, that the problem has been addressed.

Good for handing an anti-conservation person a soundbite talking point to shut down his opposition.

Eg. median strips in highways will be filled with those plants, and counted toward the total. Long, thin strips of land, between two lethal strips of vehicle carrying asphalt.

There will also be tiny little patches here and there, scattered across the state.
April 26, 2025 at 10:12 PM
But what one finds as a result of that effort is less impressive than the official numbers might lead one to expect. The state will cite the total land area covered by a prairie-like mix of plants, but then leave out the little detail of the nature of parcels of land so covered.
April 26, 2025 at 10:08 PM
The last I heard, there was an effort to create new prairie, because of the embarrassing discovery that there were less than three square miles of that ecosystem left in the entirety of "the Prairie state."

Forests and fields are being replaced by farms and yards, to the point at which one can no longer find a place in the woods where one can't hear traffic noise. Also, developers keep chopping down trees inside of towns, for some mysterious reason.

"They'll be fine as long as the habitats are good :3."

In our area (near Chicago) and throughout much of Northern Illinois, that can be a problem.

There are physicians in my family. I grew up hearing horror stories. Kept me away from a lot of unwise choices as I came of age.
April 26, 2025 at 9:56 PM
Is that an invasive species, or just one that is now growing in numbers?
April 26, 2025 at 9:53 PM
"Eh. Fungi are a bit different than plants; they're the fruit bodies, and by the time most are picked they have had plenty of time to spread spores."

Good to know. Thank you. I was worried that the more popular species would be headed for extinction.

Glad to hear that they aren't.
April 26, 2025 at 9:51 PM
On the list of things that need research funding: the domestication of morels, truffles and other edible fungi, so they no longer get picked clean in the wild.

Hard not to remember the fate of silphium, when I hear about things being picked clean.

I'd been stuck in the "food is just food" conversation with a few rapidly self-destructing good ol' boys, before and have some familiarity with the mentality.
