The luminescence of a sugar maple, Acer saccherum, a telltale sign of delectable nectar, tappable after a cold snap, only if mature to 10” around. One season would yield 1/2 quart of syrup (after 20 gallons boil down). Sweet!

Late Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) is wonderful for pollinators. Turns out it doesn’t help set bones. But it does help butterflies. monarchs sample the drying leaves of this powerhouse plant to help strengthen them for their long journeys. Why don’t we rename it “Butterfly helper”? #nativeplants

I discovered today that the swamp rose mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos) has its own specialist insect, the rose-mallow bee (Ptilothrix bombiformis). The male will wait inside flowers for visiting ground nesting females. These bees will even sleep inside the flowers!

It’s a lie, Joe Pye, that you are called a weed. You are so much more—to adore, in all your mauvish glory. Just ask the skippers that flit and dance on your inflorescence, coming back for more, far more. #nativeplants #piedmont #midatlantic

Obedient plant (Physostegia virginiana) aka false dragon head (!) is a North American native perennial that gets its name from the ability of its blossoms to stay put when moved. Try it sometime. 😉 It is sometimes called “disobedient” for its tendency to stray from where you originally planted it.

Petite and dreamy is this Verbena hastata (blue vervain), almost like a damsel in an Victoria English romance, blooming selectively for each suitor, a lovely successive circle of flowers, until all are spent at season’s end. #latesummer #nativeplants #wildflowers #ecology #habitat

Scutellaria incana, known scullcap. Native plants really need more enchanting names. One of my favorites for how lacy it looks.

Asclepias tuberosa,
Commonly known as butterflyweed, is such a cheerful addition to the native garden, with benefits to monarch butterflies. It loves medium to dry soil in sun to part sun. It has a tap root so doesn’t like to be moved once it is established. Has a low to medium height bushy habit.

This cheerful flower is a perennial black-eyed susan aka orange coneflower (Rudbeckia fulgida). This is an adaptable plant that thrives in Eastern North America. Works well as a potted plant, and finches love the seeds! #nativeplants #ecosystem #nature #gardening
