I had to volunteer for both as a part of the "Work for the Dole" when I was younger and the racist shit I heard when an Aboriginal person came by was disgusting.
Not sure about America but the RSPCA also has thrift stores or donate to your local food bank.

I would also add St Vincent DePaul to the list.
While it's illegal for the Salvos and St Vinnies to refuse you on the basis of Age, Ethnicity, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Religious beliefs... etc here in Australia. It doesn't stop them from gossiping behind your back.
