I love this breakdown of the government's new "America by Design" website and all the accessibility rules it breaks (or straight up doesn't follow). #Accessibility
I ran a brief accessibility review of the new America by Design website¹: 1. There's no skip to content link and no basic landmarks (elements with roles like header, nav, main, footer, etc.)… | J...

uneasy about the phrasing “extreme disabilities” firing around the media at the moment, as if it implies, if you have a “normal” disability that theoretically permits work in ~some~ capacity, even if it depletes your energy & every second off is spent recovering, then that’s fine

You might know us from the guides we have put together, like the de-risking guide and the UX guide. Governments all around the world have used them to make services more accessible and add more value to the public — all while saving millions of dollars. You can still find them here: 18f.org/guides/

If you are looking for a great #axecon talk, check out this one.

Eric provided an unvarnished look at the accessibility industry and how a11y folks can look after ourselves and our colleagues. I'm pumped to dig into the great resources he shared.

Jakob Nielsen has walked back his claim from last year that ‘genAI’ will solve accessibility. Now he says that intelligent agents will moot all accessibility by 2030.

I link to a Wayback version of his post from here:

Jakob Has Jumped the Shark
Yes, that is the bear from Jakob’s clearly spurious alternative text example and yes, that is The Fonz after jumping the shark. If you have been following the saga of Jakob Nielsen, there a few quotes...

While I appreciate the great speakers sharing their knowledge and skills at #axecon, I’m starting to get a sinking feeling that the #a11y industry is unprepared to confront corporate and governmental forces that are actively hostile toward people with disabilities.

Great analysis from David Dylan Thomas:
“We’ve built a web that is indifferent to the land, indifferent to the people, and indifferent to ourselves. We must do better and I believe we can.” #axecon

Interesting tidbit from the #axecon talk “No, Seriously Fuck Engagement: Building a More Human Web” by David Dylan Thomas that Abraham Maslow had nothing to do with the “Maslow pyramid” diagram. sci-hub.st/https://doi....

Dr. Shew's talk "Cyborg Cocerns & Disability Services" was the pallet cleanser I needed after the "State of Accessibility" sales pitch. #axecon

To be honest, feeling pretty dehumanized while watching #axecon as a self-employed disabled person that works in accessibility.

#axecon It's pretty gross to go from Wong's powerful message about the need to work directly with people with disabilities to improve accessibility to Deque's alternative vision of "Nah, just ask a chatbot."

#axecon Feels like cognitive whiplash going from Alice Wong telling everybody "100% accessibility is bullshit" in the kickoff keynote speech to Deque's founder Preety Kumar touting advancements in automated accessibility in the very next presentation.
