(gosh I was having a very hard time that semester but still had a good time learning)
"Tidalectical Understandings of Settler Colonialism in Dionne Brand’s In Another Place, Not Here At times, while reading Dionne Brand’s In Another Place, Not Here, I cannot help but feel queasy and seasick, as though I were moving through land, sky, and text on a rocky boat. This sensation becomes more apparent when I enter passages of Elizete while “landed up” (46) in what is known as Toronto. Shifting between descriptive passages of her experiences of homelessness and flashbacks to her relationship with Verlia in the Caribbean, the novel pays particular attention to how Elizete experiences her physical surroundings through movements between past and present, urban settler landscape and the seascape of island life, as well as real and imagined spaces (here and not here). These movements within the text find both Verlia and the Caribbean sea travelling with Elizete to Toronto, blending memories of one place with the desire for lost roots in the other. These textual routes, I argue, enact a Black Atlantic interpretation of settler colonialism through the lens of the maroon woman and through Kamau Braithwaite’s concept of tidalectics. i’m really curious how things will or won’t differ this election. when i visited the concordia stop in mtl there was an election booth right there and the overall vibe on the streets is furious campaigning and engagement, but it doesn’t feel quite like that in vancouver…
