S1 and & S2 Jayce fic snippet that reads: “WAIT!” BOOM. ✴ Jayce squeezed his eyes shut, ready for the pain to set in. This would make for a funny headline, he mused deliriously; Counselor Jayce Talis, Man of Progress, killed by a crazed version of himself in lab. He hoped Viktor would get a chuckle out of it, at least. But the pain never came. After five seconds of no blood soaking through his clothes or the feeling of a gaping hole in his body, Jayce peeled open his eyes. Tears streamed freely down the other Jayce's face, expression crumbled into one of pure agony as he stared into his matching eyes. The same corruption that infected his hammer flickered across his gaze, causing him to twitch and jerk his head to dispel it. Suddenly, all of the fight seemed sucked out of him, and he sank to his knees once more, letting go of his hammer this time. “I…I failed. I failed you, I'm sorry.” Second part of the S1 & S2 Jayce fic snippet that reads: Once he began to mumble apologies, he couldn’t stop. Sobs wracked his frame as he curled in on himself, heartbreaking, gut-wrenching cries. His words quickly became unintelligible, mixing with his broken gasps of pain. Jayce was completely overwhelmed with the show of emotion, lost on what direction to take. “...Are you alright?” Jayce hesitantly asked as he stepped forward before he cringed at himself. Clearly, the man wasn't alright, if his battered appearance and tears weren't evident enough. Taking another route, Jayce steeled his resolve and took another step forward, keeping his palms out in front of himself to show he met no harm as he approached the other man. “It's going to be okay.” “I failed, I failed, I failed, I failed–” Each exhale was a choke, only working himself further into his stupor. His eyes were hazy and unfocused, darting around the room like was vigilant for impending attacks, even in his breakdown. Jayce carefully extended his hand. His double flinched away. “It's okay,” Jayce muttered once again, trying to make himself believe it as well, “It's going to be okay. We're going to be okay. Viktor is going to be okay.” Third part of the S1 & S2 Jayce fic snippet that reads: For some reason, it was the last sentence that caused his alternate self to openly wail. A shudder ran over his body like he was being electrocuted, and he squeezed his eyes shut, the battle purely in his brain now. Jayce could only watch, horrified, as he jerked and tensed, mutters turning to pleas as he convulsed for seemingly no reason. Throwing caution to the wind, Jayce rushed to his side and placed a hand on his back, another coming to rest over his clenched fists. “Are you okay? What's wrong?!” Just as quickly as the episode started, it stopped. The other Jayce was left exhausted in its wake, eyes barely cracking open. Their gazes met, hazel looking into poisoned honey, and, for the first time since their impromptu meeting, Jayce felt seen. “Don't let him die,” His voice was torn, as if he'd swallowed a box of razors, “Please, don't let him die.” (Jayce tried not to acknowledge the resignation in the other's words. Like he already knew Jayce was going to fall short at his task, like he himself assumingly did. He tried and failed to ignore it.) “Okay,” Jayce found himself promising unthinkingly, gripping his double’s hands like a lifeline, “I won't.” Final part of the S1 & S2 Jayce fic snippet that reads: Finally, relief flooded his gaze, chasing away the arcane infection within them. He looked years younger, barely just a year older than Jayce is now. There was an intrinsic sadness to him, one buried so deep into his frame that it had become a part of what held him together. Jayce watched silently as his eyes fell shut, and he succumbed to sleep.
