it's silly that this never struck me before that hinata's balance, that he never leaves his feet is also metaphorical as the panels in chapter 398 make the connection so clear.

coach ukai is thinking about hinata's receives over the course of the black jackals v.s. schweiden adlers match.

his thought bubbles read: it's obvious that he's thinking through his digs more, paying attention to what happens after contact. but that isn't all that's massively improved. his skill at positioning, his stances, his ball control, and... his balance.

coach ukai says to coach takeda, "the way hinata works his bumps and digs now... he never leaves his feet."

daichi, sitting with asahi and sugawara says: "when he digs... he never takes a knee." sugawara's face is scrunched, holding back tears.

the first set show hinata's loss in middle school to kitagawa daiichi, his loss to aoba johsai and the meal the team had after, his collapsing from fever and the soup he had after. he is tearfully eating the meals both times.

the second set show hinata's time in brazil. when he first arrived and was discouraged, meditating on the beach, a book titled "mastery series: sleep", and hinata's feet in the sand primed for a jump. overlaid on these panels is hinata with hands clasped over his chopsticks giving thanks for his food.

sakusa chucks the book at komori who is depicted as comically deflated and play-dead.

that night sakusa goes to sleep. he is wearing a silk cap. he dreams of waking up as a giant cockroach. in a fit of abject horror and tears, sakusa sends a text to ushijima, whose contact is saved as wakatoshi-kun.

the conversation reads:
sakusa at 3:25 am: would you still play volleyball against me if i were an insect
ushijima at 6:40 am: hm
ushijima at 6:45 am: my powerful spikes would rip your little insect arms right off. i would never do that to you. stay healthy my friend.
