You can write an extension method on UnityEngine.Object that returns null for destroyed objects. That gets close, and I've seen something similar used in a few codebases. (Using it consistently is still an issue though)

For two reasons:
1) No system can contain a complete and faithful model of itself. This implies that a mind cannot be fully understood (and therefore duplicated) without perfect external observation.
2) Minds have an unfortunate tendency to stop operating when exposed to external observation.
