6/ For hospital staff, this change has lifted a heavy burden. They no longer face frantic calls in the night or impossible choices between patient safety and limited resources.

5/ This change ensures that oxygen concentrators, baby warmers, surgical equipment, and other lifesaving technology stay on, even when the power grid fails. The faster switch also reduces the reliance on diesel generators, cutting costs and lowering harmful emissions.

4/ Partners In Health, known locally as Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo, worked with Malawi’s Ministry of Health to procure and install automatic transfer switches, allowing hospitals to shift instantly from grid power to generator power without waiting for a technician.

3/ Malawi experiences frequent power outages due to an unstable national grid. Hospitals rely on backup generators, but switching from grid power to generator power requires a technician's help, often in the middle of the night. This process can take more than 10 minutes, precious time for patients.

2/ At Neno District Hospital, the power cuts in the middle of the night. Vital machines fall silent. Hospital staff know that the time it takes to restore power can mean the difference between life and death.
