Superb Owl Sunday (California edition): The Burrowing owl. (I love them best!) They are roughly 9 in tall (tiny!) and live in burrows. They'll hide in the burrow and make a rattlesnake sound to scare off predators. An endangered species.

Dead Man's Foot Fungus (Pisolithus arhizus) is an earthball mushroom! It's also called "dog turd fungus."
It's used as a natural dye, and has been since at least 1729 when Pier Antonio Micheli (botanist) discussed it in his book
