I’m very happy to be at the University of Leiden faculty of law for #PLSC-Europe. Joining in the session of @barbararlaz.bsky.social et al. session on joint controllership in smart cities. It’s a fascinating discussion.

Back in Brussels, on the tram home I saw these shoes and wondered “wait were those cremated in 1998” nope it was obviously creWated in 1998. What a conllegion!

I’m very happy to spend this weekend in one of the most beautiful Canadian towns (Banff) to take part in a workshop supported by BIRS on creating an interdisciplinary research agenda studying the effects of online privacy regulation. #dataprotection #BIRS thanks to Joel for the invitation!

Hate seeing this. Please pay attention around you. No speed, or few minutes shaved off a journey is worth risking the lives and safety of others. (At bourse /RueAntoine dansaert)

On the way to STS Nordic today (this time at KTH not SU) will be doing more real conferencing today as I have scheduled talks to give. But was happy to take part in some of the « out of the laboratory » activities in the forest yesterday.

<3 this discussion at the culture club at @cpdpconferences.bsky.social Eduard Forsch-Villaronga makes an excellent reference to the late sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. I’ve been rereading lots of Bauman and Im so happy that others see value in integrating his work in data scholarship.

Very happy to have presented my paper: “Flowing Data, Shifting Power: The Paradox of Data as a 'Fifth Freedom' in the European Union” here in Venice. Thank you to the organisers and reviewers for your support and federal. I’ll share the published version here when it’s ready!

Andare a Venezia!

It’s a great pleasure to join many experts today at the European Commission for the Food 2030 and beyond workshop. Really innovative and complex discussion today, I’m certainly learning a lot.

There's a new AI vid from DJT, this is a screen grab and my take: You insist there are only two genders, reinstate birth sex on passports, and push rigid gender identity laws—yet thse promos look like they were styled by a eurovision glam squad. The irony is serving, and it's serving in heels.🍉🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

My preoccupation when looking at 16th-century #Flemish #paintings: finding the owl. I’m starting to feel that, no matter the setting—sea, forest, desert, or castle—there’s always a tiny #owl hidden somewhere . 🦉

Full house at Université de Namur’s Rencontre "Numérique & droits humains" hosted by Crids. Lots of critical links between the social reception of digital tools by the collective and public at large discussed, putting into question how digital tools are taken for granted on social accessibility.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been out when someone pointed out the #northernlights, and honestly I never saw it, to the point I wondered if I couldn’t. Now I realise it’s a matter of angles (and tree cover). From last night, (frozen) lakeside in lapland.

Helsinki is also pretty vegan friendly, and it’s always nice to be here, but my one critique for the stadilaisia is that most vegan meals have as much protein as veg. Case in point - this ratatouille. Under all the Smokey tofu is the ratatouille! I want more veg!

I’m happy the weather app on iOS now includes Brussels for air quality map data, let’s take a moment to talk about how gross the air quality is in the cold. Tbh, I almost wish I didn’t have this data. Though it shows how clean the air is in car-free areas.

Almost a full house in Janson learning the power of DMA’s Article 6(7) to litigate against gatekeepers #FOSDEM
Enforcement is critical to securing human rights, digital rights, and a fairer open Digital Future.

#DMA gatekeepers as awkward neighbours, @fsfe.org lawyer Lucas Lasota presents case T-1080/23 against Apple to the #FOSDEM crowd.
There are more and more talks in FOSDEM about enforcement, it’s great to see how the law can support free and neutral devices.

Always nice to see @openfoodfacts.bsky.social at @fosdem.bsky.social. Great to see them linked to being a digital public good.

Great talk by Thomas Stoerk on models for economic tipping points analysis. A free model to define economic harms and forecasting tipping points of climate disasters (simply put).

The Mozilla truck asked if I accept cookies and they didn’t even process any part of my personal data, they just gave me a cookie! #FOSDEM #DataProtection #cookies

My first time seeing a stop sign on food! Latin America has stricter food labeling laws. 🇲🇽⚠️ In Mexico, these stop sign warnings highlight excessive sugar, calories, and fats. The three meant that 3 warnings would have been put on this.
Thanks nevertheless to my colleague who brought this treat!

“We need Data Protection to protect our democracy” important words made by @johnnyryan.bsky.social on data protection day. I couldn’t agree more, we urgently need to stand up for our rights now and resist the techno-oligopoly. #EDPS #CPDP #DataProtectionDay

Last time I was here was for the EU Agrifood days, this room was full, there were 2 viewing rooms, and it too 30 minutes to get in. The future of Agrifood is important but accountability against big tech is more important than ever before. Come on people, show and let’s talk about making a change!
