Effects of NAD+/NADH levels in disease pathophysiology and aging. An imbalance in the NAD+/NADH ratio generates reactive oxygen species, alters circadian rhythm, energy metabolism, inflammatory response and genome stability, and causes chronic metabolic diseases, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, aging, and cancer. NAD+, oxidized form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide; NADH, reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide; ATP, adenosine triphosphate; and ROS, reactive oxygen species.
