Besides the fishes I saw a troop of drills and other monkeys, nesting sea turtles, African Grey parrots, giant fruit bats, Xenopus, chameleons, and lots of other cool creatures thanks to the many local and international scientists there for the Conservation International rapid assessment.

it's wild that R, the ubiquitous statistical computing language, was co-created by a Māori prof (Ross Ihaka) — and yet the vast majority of scientists who use R don't know

this is like inventing the toaster. possibly the largest impact of a single member of an indigenous community on modern science

The origins of maize were the subject of controversy for well over a century. Even in the 1950's botanists like Edgar Anderson weren't totally sure what continent it came from!

FYI: we had this done through 99designs. Ran a contest, had about a dozen or so entries, after a few back-and-forth revisions of our favorites we picked a winner. This cost $300. Could have done cheaper with AI but I like paying people...

Today we publish a new paper on a molecular phylogeny of true crabs. We find crabs transitioned from marine to non-marine environments 7-17x over 100+ myr! This culminates 15+ years(!) of effort from an international team! 1/4 (thread in replies)
