Solid mid century noir, quick paced and very tense. Enjoyed the shifting first person narrators, which kept things lively.

This is apparently a classic of Japanese lit. A lot of the themes revolve around cultural changes that happened in Japan around the turn of the 20th century which was interesting. Very easy to predict the ending from early on

Obviously a genius but just not my thing, or at least something I wasn’t receptive to this time around. They feel more like puzzles than stories and I get that that’s the point but also it’s annoying. A deeper interest in religious symbolism would help. But I wasn’t raised in the church

Enjoyed this as a neo noir thriller even if I didn’t find it quite the literary masterpiece some evidently do. Enjoyed the 70s nihilism but found a key character very frustrating. Might be the kind of book I’d enjoy more if I read it again.

Incredible stuff, she’s gotta be like the greatest american novelist. This one doesn’t seem to have a big reputation which seems crazy. Very Faulkneresque in the rich sense of community and the way details are methodically withheld in such a way as to flatten the timeline of the story

DB has a reputation as a difficult academic type author but I find his stories enjoyable if you try not to subject them to any analysis at all? I dunno, I find most of this pretty funny now but used to get mad when I tried to read him in my younger days

I get why people find Eliot boring but I find her psychological insight unmatched even compared to other 19c masters. A sweet almost fable like story that could have been treacly in lesser hands but is told with enough restraint to double as a sober study of rural life
