It's funny to think that my preference for urban living in areas with dense, mixed-used, walkable neighborhoods, multi-family housing, small businesses, and diversity probably stems from Sesame Street. Like an early education in Jane Jacob's urbanist theories.

Amid “horrifying daily attacks on the prosecutorial independence of our southern neighbours," a top Ontario Crown attorney is sounding the alarm.

Poilievre and his MPs came out swinging for the freedom convoy organizers, criticizing the sentences the crown is seeking.

That's a problem:

I feel like media is wholly ignoring this major story.

A reminder that under the previous Trump administration there were at least 5000 documented cases of ICE and Border Patrol sexually abusing migrant children.

5000 documented cases.

It’s no wonder MAGAs are blocking the Epstein list.

The ICE camps are concentration camps. They should be called concentration camps.

It is, of course, important to distinguish between concentration camps and death camps, but also, I am not sure we will know when or if we undergo the transition from concentration camps into death camps.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

I’m seeing a lot of people posting about how sick they are with a “summer flu”

Main complaints? Fatigue, extremely sore throat, fever and loss of smell.

It’s Covid. The Nimbus variant is here & appears to be more transmissible.

It’s time to wear a respirator, clean the air & stay home when sick!

education standards in Canada and the USA have been enshittified for decades. I don't think people really know how to research beyond typing whatever in Google and they don't know how to examine the results

and they fight for their lives when i say "chatbots are not good for research, oh my god"
ON TOP of the ethical reasons to not use AI, it's also
1) bad at what it does
2) literally makes you stupider
3) has HUGE environmental costs: every search is equivalent to pouring out an entire bottle of water. It's not worth it to generate a cutesy emoji or have it write an error-riddled draft.
AI was trained on my books (without my permission and against my will) so this annoys me. I never use AI. Not for research, not for images, not for writing. AI used me.

THIS: "sexual harassment tells you everything about someone's relationship with power"

Thank you for this concise and on-the-mark framing, @ourobororoboruo.bsky.social
Wow, NYTimes be like, “Andrew Cuomo is our problematic fave."

The editorial board willfully misunderstands something I figured out in early adulthood: that sexual harassment tells you everything about someone’s relationship with power, and on its own, ought to be enough to disqualify from office.
NYT Editorial board effectively endorses Andrew Cuomo today in the most weaselly possible way. “Don’t rank Mamdani, and it will probably be either him or Cuomo, sooo…”
