I've spent all morning making ggplot cross plots of confusing min/geochem on billion year old+ rocks and I have no idea what's going on but GOSH DO I LOVE DOING IT. Anyway if anyone wants to explain to me why there's an inverse relationship btwn TOC & kaolinite hit me up

OK so I've been pretty quiet on here for quite some time. I'm still trying to figure out how best to use this place in a way that is generative, sustainable, and (at least sometimes) fun.

Here's a sea lion I met last week at Carmel River Beach on a family trip to CA.

Shout out to my Canvas course transfer which has applied random dates to all of my assignments. So I guess the first assignment is for my students to build time machines! FUN!!!!

So as a helpful distraction from [[waves hands]] I decided to make myself a lab group logo. Here's my first pass. Any feedback?

Yesterday I had the chance to do pinhole photography for the first time in over 2 decades and it was fabulous. Quaker Oats container with a brass pinhole plate.

PRI also care for one of the largest invertebrate fossil collections in the US, with an estimated 7 million specimens (larger than the American Museum of
Natural History!)

One of my favorite things about this project, and so much of my work, is the vast array of scales in which the work takes place - from outcrops to electron microscopes. Here's a scanning electron microscope image of one of these apatite scale microfossils, showing bonkers sub-micron scale detail.

These rocks are from a place called Mount Slipper, right on the AK/Yukon border, on the land of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in people. Here's my other amazing colleague Justin Strauss looking out over the (snowy) ca. 800 million year old rocks where we collected these fossils.

I spent hoursssss trying to get this fossil and a handful of others on to these grids - and then I put them in my carry on luggage and flew them to Oxford U where Nick was at the time to examine them with their high res TEM microscope. Here's me in 2014 collecting the rocks that fossil is found in.
